Hooray!!

I now have a working phone again!
This means I’ll more than likely waste a lot of battery power reblogging shit on tumblr!
I’mmm baaaccckkkk.

pilosopogyno:

This man, James Verone, robbed a bank for one dollar. Why only one dollar? Because he knew that in prison he could get the medical care he could not afford with his part time salary as a convenience store clerk. He was approved for food stamps, but they did little to help his finances. Between his back problems, carpel tunnel, and arthritis, he simply couldn’t handle the pain any longer.
On June 9th, he sent a letter to his local paper, the Gaston Gazette, that stated: “When you receive this a bank robbery will have been committed by me. this robbery is being committed by me for one dollar. I am of sound mind but not so much sound body.”
He then took a cab to the RBC Bank, and handed the teller a note asking for one dollar and medical attention. He quietly took a seat in the lobby and waited for police to arrive.
Since Verone only stole one dollar, he was only charged with larceny. His bail, which he doesn’t plan to pay is set at $2,000, reduced from the normal $100,000. He’s scheduled to see a doctor this Friday, and hopes to get foot surgery, back surgery and to have a protrusion on his check treated.
To me, this is the perfect example of how disturbingly corrupt and unjust our health care system has become under HMO’s. For this man, or any person for that matter, feels that he needs to be imprisoned just to see a doctor, is ridiculous.
This is exactly what I hate about America. Why is it that you can buy an entire house with money you don’t have, but still can’t apply for health care if you don’t meet the requirements? That’s messed up.

I’ve been wearing more makeup lately than I used to, and inevitably, I more often get to hear:
“Oh, you don’t need makeup. You’re beautiful without it!”
And I talk a lot of beauty and loving myself just how I am. Some people feel these two things are hypocritical, to love yourself and wear makeup. And okay, yes, let’s acknowledge that there are women who feel pressured to wear it despite not wanting to. This happens. But a lot of the time, women wear makeup for themselves. It’s fun! It’s expressive. It’s artistic. It’s not “necessary,” but neither is pizza.
I’m not trying to cover anything up the same way an artist isn’t putting paint on a canvas for the sake of covering the canvas.

I love this woman!

Miley speaks for us all.

the face omg

Yeah, because Miley Cyrus should be throwing stones. Not that I don’t agree that was a superb diss.

Eh. It’s Justin “Anne Frank would’ve been a Bieliber” Bieber. After that one, Miley’s going to have to work pretty hard to be a worse mess than that little asshole.

I like Miley Cyrus a lot and always have. Her public persona has always been one of confidence, empowerment, facing your fears and following your passions. Her music may not be everyone’s cup of tea (I’m a pop music fan and I think she has a cool voice but YMMV), but since she was a wee teenager, she’s written consistently positive songs about how it’s okay to be flawed and be scared or worried that you’re not good enough and that it doesn’t make you less of a person to fail to live up to other people’s ideals.

Generally speaking, she’s articulate, outspoken, funny, and largely unconcerned with the media’s creepy micro-criticism of her style, her body and her decision-making.  I think that is a valuable message to send to young girls.

She is also passionate about LGBT rights, to the extent that she got a tattoo in support of marriage equality last year and rallies her fans to not support companies that donate to anti-gay lobbyists.

Soooo I kinda do think she can afford to throw a stone or two. :)

Just thought I’d share this charming piece of graffiti from near my home.
By the way, this is the ONLY women’s library in the country, it has only women’s work in it and also serves as a sort of feminist museum. They’re affiliated with a university close by and hold regular events such as workshops and talks on subjects like the poetry of immigrant women of colour or the representation of mental health in women’s literature. Its also due to be closed down by the Conservatives.

Can men go in and borrow books written by women?

Yeah, totally, they even do events for men by women on intro to feminism, rape culture stuff sometimes!

god forbid women have a single fucking thing without men getting jealous like fucking children

People being angry about ~dem gays~ on Target’s Facebook.

I just want to give my two cents on this and tell you a story.

A couple weeks ago, I was hired at Target. I have a job at Target. Not a big deal right?

It is a big deal because i’m a transman

It doesn’t take a genius to conclude that it’s hard for me, my brothers, and sisters to get a job. There are legal restraints regarding the job and if you don’t pass, it’s hard to be taken seriously at a job interview.

Right on the application, it asks what your preferred name is. It also asks if there is anything that target should know. I put the fact that I am a transman, expecting not to get a call because usually when you put that down, people will throw out the application. I got TWO interviews.

At the interview, they asked me about it. I told them I am on hormones and they told me that they didn’t care. Not in the sense that they don’t emotionally care, but that it didn’t matter. I was male and that’s all that mattered. They also told me that they give sex same couples benefits in states that do not recognize them as a married couple.

At my job orientation, I was not misgendered once. Even my supervisors who weren’t sure of my gender avoided pronoun use, which I found only happens when you’ve had pronoun training. They gave me a name tag with my preferred name and didn’t ask questions. I felt safe and respected, which is huge for a trans* person.

TLDR: Target is amazing not just for the LGB, but also the T. Shop there for the rest of your life.
